Playwright, director and singer songwriter Sean Nicholas Savage has returned to a pop palette with his most brilliant batch of classic ballads to date. His new album, “The Knowing” is a pivot; at once more subversive and yet more fashionable than ever before.

'Sometimes we must go back to the beginning
to harvest a future in the fertile soils of our past'

In Spring 2024 Savage recorded the first version of “The Knowing” in Edmonton, Canada. In the same basement where he grew up listening to records late at night, with the speakers off and his ear to the needle so no one would wake up. The song Part 2 (featuring Better Person) was written about the West Edmonton Mall near where Sean grew up, which was the biggest mall in the world until 2004.

'I'm just a piece of a puzzle makes a picture I can never see' - Part 2

That August, the second and final version of the record was produced. This time with longtime collaborator Pascal Chenard and bandmate Samuel Beaulieu in London England, where Savage was born. Chenard produced music for the live version of Savage’s musical play “Please Thrill Me” and musical film “The Plumber”. The album’s opener, “Stranger Than Fiction”, was written on the tube and recorded during the first night of the London session, which was also Sean Nicholas Savage’s birthday.

'We went to Hammersmith where my family had lived, and saw the old house there on the morning of my birthday. A few manic weeks of writing and recording began that night.'

Sean Nicholas Savage engaged several other collaborators on this record. The lead single, “Your Drug”, a reflective duet with Arbutus Records label mate Marci, both familiar and yet with an edgy bareness that allows it to recontextualize its nostalgic trope. Belgian singer songwriter David Numwami plays guitar on the songs “Stranger Than Fiction” and “Wild Things” and artist JJ Weihl aka Discovery Zone helped co-wrote “Pink Bouquet”.

'I still love you is a secret that i buried forever in a hole in the world where a human once was' - Wild Things

Savage is in peak lyrical form on this record. The words for title track “The Knowing” were initially a study in saying as much as possible with every sentence using the word 'know' in it. Savage himself did not know what was being communicated at first until through the process a poem was revealed.

'What is The Knowing about?
Almost all that I say in it, is that I don't know, although i'm sure, anyone who listens closely to the song, knows what it's about.'

Cleverly tucked into the tracklist is a tender cover of Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life”, somehow appropriately strummed softly in the vein of Green Days’ “Good Riddance”. Sean Nicholas Savage collaborated with Lulannie for the album artwork photos, which they took on their way out to a New Years Eve 2025 party in New York City. The song “I Love Everything About You” is about their relationship.

'Your unflattering photos are the ones i cherish most' - I Love Everything About You

The last few years of Sean Nicholas Savage’s output have seen three musicals, each with original music: “Please Thrill Me”, “The Fear” and “The Plumber”, the latter of which was made into a film.
Savage’s last two records, “Shine” and “Life Is Crazy”, each progressively more stark and introspective, are masterpieces in their own right.

This is the first time Sean Nicholas Savage has released an album with a label other than Montreal label Arbutus Records (Marci, Das Beat). Another first is releasing the record between Philadelphia record label Born Losers Records (Johnny Dynamite, Catherine Moan) and Berlin label Mansions & Millions (Discovery Zone, Better Person).

'So soft, it's hard. so bad, it's good. so fake, it's real.
but sometimes the truth is Stranger Than Fiction.'

Sean Nicholas Savage’s “The Knowing” is out on June 27th 2025 via Born Losers Records and Mansions & Millions.
