Discovery Zone - Quantum Web EXP Tape

Discovery Zone’s Quantum Web EXP is an expanded journey through the shimmering circuitry of 2024’s Quantum Web, the second album by the New York-born and based musician and multi-media artist JJ Weihl. This extended version, marking the year anniversary of Quantum Web, invites listeners deeper into Discovery Zone’s maze, where melodies fracture and reform, music becomes mirror and mirage, and circuitous patterns lead to electric dreams.

Quantum Web was the highly anticipated follow up to Remote Control, JJ’s ascendent 2020 debut album and first solo offering after years as a singer and bass player in the beloved Berlin-based band Fenster. With both albums, JJ worked with French producer E.T. (who also helms new mixes of “Mall of Luv” and “Ur Eyes” here) to define the Discovery Zone sound and distinguish her music further, and further more, from her group pursuits.

Echoes of 80s sophisti-pop, hyper-digital textures, and early electro remained musical cornerstones from Remote Control to Quantum Web , but JJ’s voice, spectral and up front at once, and ambitious, illusory conceptual framework created an almost invisible depth and dimension to her sophomore offering. Quantum Web evolved in the moment and on the move while JJ toured throughout 2024 with Crumb, L’Rain, Julia Holter, and extensively on her own.

"With every offering the pieces get shaken around and placed somewhere else in your mind. The same clouds re-forming again and again and the same notes and letters too, says JJ. “And then maybe at the end, it’s better to leave the pieces out all together, or at least not to use words to try and explain them. Not to use songs to try and explain the music.The feeling left behind without words. Without meaning. Without music."

As listeners wander through Quantum Web EXP, they encounter fragments—a loop, a shadow or perhaps just a memory. This is music that revels in reinterpretation, acknowledging that meaning often dissolves as soon as it’s grasped. Chaos becomes order, then chaos again.
